Egyptian Art Museums and Galleries Egyptian Art Posters Ancient Asian Art Ancient Islamic Art Egyptian civilization has long been regarded as the most rigid and conservative ever. Although at first glance all Egyptian art between 3000 and 500 BC tends to have certain sameness, it may had not been changed in 10,000 years. Egyptian art alternates between conservatism and innovation, but is never static. Some of its great achievements had a decisive influence on Greek and Roman art.
The Egyptian Old Kingdom begins about 3100 B.C., right after more than 3000 years of the pre-dynastic and archaic period. The age of the first ancient wonders of the world began with the pyramids of Giza that were built by King Sneferu during the Old Kingdom that lasted until the death of king Pepi II in 2180 B.C.
The Middle Kingdom started with political disturbances period where the unquiet spirit that period is well reflected in Egyptian art especially in the royal portraits, paintings and relieves. Egypt was invaded by the Hyksos who brought many innovations in art and technologies and ruled Egypt until the war between them and the Thebans in about 1550 B.C.
The following 500 years after the Middle Kingdom is known as the New Kingdom, where the country united under strong and efficient kings and queens like Ahmose I, Hatshepsut, Tutankhamun, Ramses II, Ramses III and Queen Nefertiti who was the wife of Akhenaten and could be also his mother at the same time. The mystery of Nefertiti's origins remains a large topic of debate and among the architectural enterprises that have suvived from the early years of the New Kingdom, is the Funerary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut that was built about 1478-1458 B.C. Also one of the important temples is the Luxor temple that was built about 1350 B.C. During this period tremendous architectural projects were carried out, centering the region of the new capital, Thebes, while the royal tombs reached unequal material.
