McFarlane's Toys  The Popular Comics  Spider-Man Collection  Spawn Collection  Other Famous Artists Todd McFarlane was born in Calgary March 16, 1961. As a teen, the young Canadian discovered comics being drawn to the top artists of the 70's including Mike Golden, Marshall Rogers and Walt Simonson, and later Arthur Adams. In fact, his main passion was baseball, to the extent that he received an athletic scholarship at Eastern Washington University because of his exemplary ball playing. Todd didn't really get into comics until his seventeenth year and then it became such a major obsession, that he graduated in 1984 with degrees in Fine Arts & Graphic Design. He began pursuing his career in the comics. He found it wasn't going to happen quickly as he reportedly amassed some rejection slips from publishers. One year later it was obvious that a star of the first magnitude had appeared on the horizon. He took on DC Comics' Infinity, Inc., Invasion and Detective Comics; and many more Marvel titles, including Spitfire, The Incredible Hulk, Daredevil, The New Mutants, Wolverine, and his most recognized work, The Amazing Spider-Man. His fame was assured with the appearance of the celebrated three-cover Spider-Man #1 in 1990, which besides being a major seller for Marvel, heralded a new age in comics art. After doing over a dozen issues of the book, he felt the need to further his potential that he collaborated with six other artists in forming their own company, ‘Image Comics’, an entirely new line of books with an emphasis on creator's rights. In 1994, Todd form his own toy company. McFarlane Toys, as the venture was first called (it is now called McFarlane Toys) are some of the most successful toys ever produced. Fame, however, has not gone to his head, he is still in love with the art field and spends hours a day at his convention appearances signing copies of his comics and talking with his hordes of fans.
